2. Celery Helps Lower Cholesterol

Celery contains Phytosterols which are a component found in plants that help lower cholesterol levels. (Reminder, not all Cholesterol is bad!) However, in just 1 cup of raw celery there are 6.6mg of phytosterols!

3. Detox

Celery contains high amounts of water and contains fiber so it can help you poop and flush out your natural detox systems in your body.

4.Hydration

Celery contains Magnesium, Sodium and other electrolytes which help not only hydrate you but also give you cellular energy! We can consume lots of water but electrolytes, which are certain minerals, help push the water into our cells. This helps prevent leg cramps, headaches, fatigue and other hydration related concerns.

5. Weight Loss

Celery is a very low calorie food containing only 16 calories per cup of raw celery. (nutrition data.com) Containing a low caloric value, in combination with detoxing the body and fighting inflammation it can help rid the body of unwanted fat.

6. Alkalize the Body

Fruits and vegetables are foods that tend to be more alkaline and higher protein foods tend to be more acidic. We want a balance, however too much stress, inflammatory foods and even exercise can increase the body’s acidity to higher levels. Leaving us with sore muscles and slowed digestion.

7. Bruise Fighting

Vitamin K is high in Celery and can help with natural blood clotting. Which in return helps minimize bruising, and excessive bleeding when cut.

8. Lower High Blood Pressure

Magnesium and Potassium both work together to relax the heart, open blood vessels and increase the body’s ability to deal with stress.

9. Improved Bone Density

Calcium and Magnesium help balance out the heart. Calcium helps it contract and Magnesium helps it relax, now what about bone health? We all know calcium helps with bone density, but magnesium is a crucial mineral that supports calcium absorption along with vitamin d and k that keep calcium from building up in the blood stream.

10. Minimizing Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

According to Pubmed “Type 2 diabetes is frequently associated with both extracellular and intracellular magnesium (Mg) deficits….Mg also is deeply involved in the regulation of insulin signaling, in the phosphorylation of insulin receptor kinase, in the post receptorial action of insulin, and in insulin-mediated cellular glucose uptake. Another possible link between Mg deficiency and reduced insulin sensitivity is the presence of oxidative stress and/or inflammation. Thus, free radicals are often increased in DM2, hypertension, metabolic syndrome and aging, conditions also associated with Mg deficits[24,25]”.

Over 29.1 million people have Diabetes, so implementing a few dietary changes such as adding a cup of celery with your meal could make a difference over time. Over 1 million people each year are diagnosed with Diabetes per year. So is drinking a glass of celery juice or eating a cup of it raw really that hard to do?
